In recognition of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting leaders whose expertise, integrity, and dedication to developing others continue to strengthen the advisory profession. Today, we’re spotlighting Julia Reyes, Partner, Investment Performance, whose steady leadership, technical depth, and commitment to developing others continue to elevate the quality and clarity of performance operations for both clients and colleagues.
Was there a defining moment earlier in your career that changed your trajectory or gave you clarity about your path?
There wasn’t a single defining moment. Instead, I had the privilege of working alongside senior professionals who were passionate about their work and exceptionally skilled in their fields. Their achievements were inspiring, but what mattered most was that they gave me the time, space, and opportunities to grow. That steady encouragement and the example they set shaped my career far more than any single turning point.
What motivates you most about the work you do today, particularly in the impact you have on clients or the industry?
Relationships, both with clients and colleagues, are what motivate me. Partnering with clients to navigate complex challenges and arrive at practical, ethical solutions is deeply rewarding. And internally, collaboration and shared problem-solving with colleagues is energizing. Those relationships are the foundation of everything we do.
How would you describe your leadership style and your approach to advising clients through complex challenges?
My leadership style is rooted in mentorship. I focus on aligning on the desired outcome and then empowering the team to determine the best path forward, while providing support and coaching along the way.
I take the same approach with clients. I start by fully understanding their end goals, then work backward to identify practical solutions. When a straightforward path doesn’t exist, I collaborate with them to explore thoughtful, workable alternatives.
What accomplishment or client outcome are you especially proud of, and why was it meaningful to you?
I’m most proud of the growth I’ve seen within our team. Watching people develop confidence, expand their capabilities, and step into greater responsibility is incredibly meaningful. That kind of progress reinforces why mentorship and long-term investment in people matter so much to me.
Is there a piece of advice that has stayed with you or shaped how you show up as a trusted partner?
Be prepared. Early in my career, I learned that if a client asks a question and you don’t know the answer, it’s okay to say so, then go do the research. Nobody knows everything, and I certainly don’t. But together, our collective experience is powerful. Do the research, do the work, ask your team, and file it away. Each time you prepare, it gets a little easier.
What’s one common misconception about your area of expertise that you often help clients rethink?
A common misconception in investment performance operations is that systems and tools alone can ensure accurate and comprehensive return calculations. Systems are powerful, but they depend on how they’re configured, the assumptions they rely on, and the quality of the data that feeds them.
Automation can create blind spots if users don’t fully understand the methodology or limitations behind the system. Performance platforms should be viewed as tools, not substitutes for governance, controls, and professional judgment.
Conclusion
Julia’s career demonstrates the impact of thoughtful leadership grounded in preparation, collaboration, and mentorship. Her ability to guide teams, elevate client capabilities, and bring clarity to complex performance operations continues to strengthen the client experience and advance the discipline.
